Dedicated breeders of Black Alpacas meet at Inca Alpaca in Dorset
 |
On the 6th of February Inca Alpaca invited a group of owners and breeders of black alpacas to their farm for a day of information sharing and learning. The Main objective of the day was to bring like minded people together for a social and information sharing experience.
The day kicked off with an informative talk and presentation from Kerry at Toft Alpaca. Kerry talked about what is involved in processing British alpaca fibre and explained that currently she is processing 9 tonnes per year. Toft Alpaca are producers of quality yarn, knitware and woven products and can offer great opportunities to the group to sell and value add their fibre clip.
|
 |
The group then moved into the working area of the barn where a group of 6 and 7 year old elite black females and their progeny were assessed. The object of this exercise was to give breeders an chance to assess older high quality females as it can be hard to understand and assess the quality of older stock.
A delicious hog roast was then offered for lunch with a few glasses of wine.
|
 |
After lunch the group moved into the work area again where Kerry and Tim took the group through how to prepare a sheared fleece for processing and show classes. The group then had to chance to observe some breeding results at Inca Alpaca. Some females that were presented had bred poorly with non black crias at foot and some had bred very well with black crias at foot. The interesting point of this excercise was discovered when the pedigree certificates were examined and the females with the fawn crias exhibited fawn or white grand parents on both sides of their pedigree.
|
 |
The day finished up with a group discussion on husbandry, welfare and general information sharing.
Tim and Tracey would like to thank Kerry from Toft Alpaca and all of the breeders that travelled to Inca Alpaca for the first meeting of black alpaca owners.
If you would like to be added to a mailing list so that you can keep up to date with the group's activities and meetings please email us at: mail@incaalpaca.co.uk

24th of January 2009: Inca Alpaca congratulates Alpakas am Golden Stern - Germany
Inca Alpaca would like to congratulate and thank Babett and Wolfgang from Alpakas am Goldenen Stern for becoming joint owners of Atlantic Orphan.

Inca Alpacas has entered into a joint venture with Alpakas am Goldenen Stern for the ownership of a top black huacaya male know as Atlantic Orphan. Babett and Wolfgang live in the East of Germany and have a growing herd of alpacas. Due to the lack of high quality proven black herd sires in Germany, Wolfgang and Babett decided that they would invest in a 7 year old herd sire who had proven himself over the last 5 years. Their breeding programme demanded a sire that would correct and improve the conformation and look of their herd as well as add density and long lasting fineness. Atlantic Orphan offers these traits while being predictable and low risk.
Tim and Tracey wish Wolfgang and Babett much success with Orphan and are pleased to be partners in this wonderful black herd sire.

28th of October 2008: Inca Alpaca congratulates Patou Alpacas.
Inca Alpaca would like to congratulate and thank Patou Alpacas for the purchase of their new herd sire Cambridge Columbus.

Cambridge Columbus will be a very important and useful addition to Patou's herd as he is one of only a few high quality brown huacaya males available in the UK. Not only does Columbus have a great phenotype but he also comes from a very similar and uniform family line. We wish Patou Alpacas and all the breeders who use Columbus the a bright future and many healthy crias.

£1 MILLION ALPACA DEAL MAKES INDUSTRY HISTORY
Press release - The SPA Way London
Moonsbrook Alpacas finalises a deal for the
Entire EP Cambridge Suri herd

Front feft to right: Tim Hey, Liz Jefferson, James Young, Matthew Lloyd and Peter Lydon
In a deal set to transform alpaca breeding in the UK and the industry worldwide, Moonsbrook Alpacas has today announced the acquisition of the finest pedigree herd of Suri alpacas in Europe from leading alpaca stud, EP Cambridge UK. James Young, previously Deputy Chairman of Youngs Brewery and his partner Tim Hey, founders of Moonsbrook Alpacas, have purchased 250 head of livestock worth £1 million to supply prized alpaca fibre and pure-bred bloodstock for the growing domestic and European market.
The deal, which will be completed in October, is intended to bring a quantum leap to the fledgling alpaca industry in this country and will look to strengthen confidence and further investment in the industry, which is thought to be approximately ten years behind countries such as the US and Australia.
Although the UK market is still in its developing stages, it is, nevertheless, at least seven years ahead of Europe and subsequently offers producers real investment opportunity. Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Finland, France and Spain have been identified as having significant market potential.
Philip O’Conor of EP Cambridge UK says: “As the deal with Moonsbrook testifies, the interest in the UK alpaca industry is rapidly growing. With excellent financial return, EP Cambridge is seeing more people than ever, including farmers seeking to diversify and investors looking to develop the pedigree bloodlines which will ensure the industry’s long term success. In addition, there is the added bonus that breeding alpacas is also emotionally rewarding as well as profitable.”
EP Cambridge Alpaca Stud UK (formerly Atlantic Alpacas and Arunvale Alpacas) was established in 2005 when it merged with EP Cambridge Australia, to form the largest alpaca business anywhere in the world. The company aims to provide a comprehensive all-round service for alpaca owners from all backgrounds and degrees of experience.

Elite Herd Sires Arrive At Inca Alpaca
At last our two new blue black herd sires have arrived from Australia and are looking great. Canchones Witness and Canchones Discovery will be a valuable addition to the herd as they bring at least four generations of elite and proven black genetic lines from Australia.
These sires have been selected individually to go one step further to fixing the fleece and conformational traits that we think are so important for the future of the UK fibre industry. These traits being: strong and correct frames, uniform colour, super soft fleeces, low guard hair levels, high staple length and density.
Canchones Discovery is the oldest of the two sires and will be available for affordable and convienient stud service in 2007.

Picture - Left to right: Canchones Discovery, Sue Atkins, Nick Atkins, Tim Hey, Chas Brooke, Rachel Hebditch and Canchones Witness. Absent: Derek Meyer and Philip O'Conor.
Congratulations to the co-owners of these two show winning black sires: EP Cambridge Alpaca Stud UK, Atkins Alpacas, Classical MileEnd Alpacas and O'Dell Alpacas.

Seed Stock Arrives From Australia
Our stud stock from Australia finally arrived from Australia last weekend ending a nervous wait. This selection has been a culmination of twelve months works by www.stanfordlivestock.com and of course us here at Inca Alpaca.
The females were selected using stringent criteria based on our knowledge of the quality of the best black huacayas in Australia in 2005. We needed to increase our number of females that had strong frames, great fineness in the fleece while also carrying the other fibre characteristics that are found in good quality whites. We need females in the UK that will breed exceptional cria every time and with great uniformity.
This import is very exciting for us because it carries some of the best black genetics found and proven in Australia to date. This group of females are totally unrelated to 99 percent of black huacayas in Europe, giving us potential to use males born from these females and improve the industry.
Nine of these girls have retained their pregnancy to Cedar House Amar, a Champion Black sire bred by Cedar Huse Alpaca Stud now residing in NZ with Sherlin Alpacas. This genetic imput by Amar will help secure Inca Alpaca's future in the industry and push our productivity of black fibre forward.
Inspection of these females and all the stock at Inca Alpaca is most welcome.
